When Autumn arrives next week here in the SEARK, don't expect to feel a cool northerly breeze as you step outside. You may even be tempted to do a double-take at the calendar. 2010 is already "one for the record books" and may rack up another record or two, as summer-like temps continue on into the latter part of September, before more seasonal weather makes an appearance.
Along with the above normal temperatures, most of the SEARK is suffering from very dry conditions. Severe drought conditions are inching further north and west into southern and eastern Arkansas from Louisiana and far western Mississippi. With this being a La Nina year, below average rainfall can be expected this fall. In fact, most climatologists are calling for a very mild winter for 2010-2011.
Of course, the dry weather during the fall harvest is just what the farmers would like to see, allowing them to get their crops out of the fields in a timely manner. Cotton farmers will begin picking in earnest very soon.(Some have already begun)
In my next blogpost, I will be taking a close-up look(with my NIKON, of course) at the Cotton harvest, and at those individuals who make this happen-year after year.
