With a month of summer 2010 behind us, some thoughts so far:
(1) The very dry conditions from early spring have persisted and evolved into a full-fledged drought for some parts of the SEARK, especially the far south and east portions. (2) What many were predicting to be a record-breaking summer for our region, has began above normal, but with few records being broken(so far). That is meaningless if you work outside and are having to endure the triple-digit heat indicies which have been prevalent since early June.
(3) the ridge of high pressure that has been responsible for scorching much of the Northeast and East this summer. If it continues to hold strong, it may force most, if not all of the tropical systems the next few weeks, around the ridge and into the Gulf of Mexico, thus possibly increasing our chances of precipitation to begin our second month of summer.
The first such system is the remnants of Bonnie, which will make landfall in LA later tonight. It should start impacting the SEARK by Sunday.
It will depart our region by the middle of next week, with a possible return of triple-digit heat index readings by week's end.
