Many are wondering just why the snow turned to rain this morning. After all, that’s what was forecast-snow and sleet. But freezing drizzle and rain were possible all the time.
The following was part of the Area Forecast Discussion (also known as the AFD) from the National Weather Service yesterday: “THE MORE NOTABLE AND CONCERNING TRENDS IN THE MODELS INVOLVE AN IMPRESSIVE DRY SLOT WRAPPING INTO THE UPR LOW AS IT MOVES THROUGH THE NWRN PART OF THE STATE FRIDAY AFTERNOON. THIS DRY SLOT WILL SLIDE IN AND REMOVE MOST ALL MSTR FROM THE DENDRITIC GROWTH ZONE...QUITE POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A QUICK CHANGEOVER FROM LIGHT SNOW TO FREEZING DRIZZLE ….” That, along with some WAA (warm air advection) at certain levels of the atmosphere.
It’s also possible, that on the back side of this upper level low, precipitation it will change back to snow before ending. A limited warm-up this weekend is expected and then, all eyes will be focused on next week and the prospects for a major winter storm for the Tuesday/Wednesday timeframe. We will talk about that in a future blog.
