A Touch of Fall to Return; Hints About the Upcoming Winter

The SEARK returned to “familiar territory”  climatologically speaking yesterday, as the temperature reached 95 degrees, that range of temps that we have grown all-too accustomed to this summer.  That occurring after a fabulous few days of below normal readings.  IF the month were to end today, we would actually be below normal for September!

More hints of Fall will be making their way to the SEARK later this week as a  new cold front lays siege to the very seasonal weather we are experiencing.  The front is expected to enter the northern part of the state late tonight and stall out for a time before exiting the state later this week.  It is expected to  hang up in Northern Louisiana and bring on and off chances of rain to the area thru this weekend.  Precipitation amounts are expected to be light though.

We are already over an inch below normal for the month of September.  Which reminds me-check out this chart:

This chart show us just how bad the drought situation really has become.  This is just the departure from normal for THIS year.  If you go back to the beginning of 2010, we are close to 30 inches below normal-WOW!

Word earlier this month that we are now entering another “La Nina” weather pattern, this after just enduring one back late in 2010 through the Spring of 2011.  La Nina is the cooling of the pacific ocean sea surface temperatures that effect weather patterns around the world.

According to Joe Bastardi, Meteorologist for WeatherBell Analytics, analog data suggest when you have two La Nina years back to back you can expect to have an early onset to Fall and early COLD weather for some (for us). Things are shaping up just that way.  Don’t be surprised to see some very cold weather in  December and January with a warmer February and a stormy March!

Check this out:

Thursday%20cold

This is the GFS 2 meter (surface) temperature departure from normal chart for Thursday morning.  Over 20 degrees colder than normal in some parts of the plains.  This gets me excited  because I love this  time of the year-especially if its cool!!

There is also a down side to the back-to-back La Nina Phase.  Below normal precipitation for the Southern Plains-the area that needs the rain the most. We were hoping for a tropical system to help out that area but it hasn’t happened. After September it’s very difficult to get a system to come up into Texas because of the return of the westerly steering currents. We will pray something happens because, after all, God is in control.
