After a Long Hot Summer-Relief is on the Way!

You may have thought that yours truly had abandoned this blog or despite modern technology (which proves we live on a oval not a flat surface) and that I had perhaps fallen off the earth. Nope.  I’M BACK!!

Because my back is ailing me again, now I have found the time to drop a few lines, and make a few comments about the seemingly endless summer we have witnessed during 2011 and discuss what may lie ahead of us, climatologically speaking, for the next few days.

Looking back at this summer, Monticello and Drew County  reached the triple digits 24 times this year, compared to 12 times in 2010.  The average daily temperature for the JJA time period was 5 degrees above the running norms. Several record highs were set this year(and record high “lows”).  On August 3rd, Monticello recorded their highest temp of the year when it reached a scorching 107 degrees!

When it comes to rainfall , most of the SEARK  is in the midst of a two year drought which finds us running a deficit of 27.19 inches over that same time period(January 2010-August 2011)**.

We can expect 1 more day of hot temperatures before a cold front and the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee bring a much needed and welcomed relief to the SEARK and the rest of the Mid South.  Rain chances will increase tonight and tomorrow and breezy northeast winds will bring a refreshing change to the conditions we have become accustomed to the last few months.

The latest projected rainfall amounts for our area range from 1/2 to 2 inches, with the heavier amounts in the extreme southeast. Those amounts are subject to change, depending on the exact track of T.S. Lee.

Temperatures next week will be pleasant with highs in the upper 70’s to mid 80’s and lows from the upper 50’s to mid 60’s.
